Atlantic Spadefish (Chaetodipterus faber) – United Caribbean, Deerfield Beach, Fl

Schools of Spadefish, sometimes hundreds of individuals, fly over the wreck in slow, methodical groupings.  These fish often like to hang out at the leading edge of the ship, into the current, feeding on small creatures being swept over the wreck by the tides.  On this particular day, I had seen the school while descending to the bottom, but was surprised when about 100 of them broke off and surrounded me – seemingly unafraid of my scuba gear or my camera, they slowly circled as I watched until I unfortunately had to ascend, leaving them behind to wander the ships deck.
