Banded Jawfish (Opistognathus macrognathus) – Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach, Fl

Jawfish are interesting little creatures.  Excavating holes using their large mouths, they constantly ‘dig’ sand up and ‘spit’ it out to maintain their homes, also using shells to strengthen the shape of the hole.  When not working, they can be seen peeking out from their tunnels using their large eyes to spot small prey swimming overhead.  I always like shooting Jawfish, although very difficult, because of the cool, oil-slick patterns seen in their eyes.  This one was comfortable enough around me to come out long enough to snap this picture – its head speckled in sand.
