Sargassum Pipefish (Syngnathus pelagicus) – Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach, Fl
Pipefish are tiny, slender little fish in the same Family as SeaHorses. They disappear due to their sheer lack of size (much thinner than a pencil), blending in with seaweed and rubble strewn across the bottom. I was lucky enough to be around a Blue Heron expert during this dive, who graciously pointed out this little subject for me. The real life version of “Where’s Waldo”, Pipefish are difficult to see even after you’ve found them for the first time! This little guy posed for me among his seaweed neighborhood before I inadvertently looked away for a moment and was left unable to find him again.
