Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) – Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach, Fl
While taking a photography course with experienced BHB divers, I was directed to this PVC pipe sticking up out of the bottom. I knew my guide was putting me onto something interesting, but all I saw were some barnacles, a small feather duster, common occurrences – I was confused. Until I turned on my focus light to look inside the pipe. This octopus was taking a break from the afternoon sun, curled up in an almost inconceivably small hiding spot. I had quite the time trying to line up my lights to hit inside of the pipe (diameter of about 4″) to capture the Octopus’ eye looking out at me, fortunately I was able to luck into this shot of the creature and his lovely front door.
