Banded Coral Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus) – Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach, Fl
Banded Coral Shrimp, or Barbershop Shrimp, are the candy on the top shelf – tempting but difficult to reach. They live in crevices, under ledges, and between large rocks, making them inconvenient to approach with large camera gear. Shooting these types of photos requires not only a camera in a housing, but also lights which hang off the sides of the rig making for a less than nimble set-up. To achieve this photo, I had to position, re-position, and then re-re-position my lights to fit under this little ledge where the shrimp sat just out of range. Flipping the camera upside-down, I carefully slipped my twisted camera rig into position and snapped off the shutter. Once home, I realized just how intricate these little animals are – I am still amazed with the ‘crosshatch’ pattern in its eye (the eye of a 2″ shrimp), one of the finer details I’ve ever achieved in a shot at Blue Heron.
