IC 5146 – Cocoon Nebula

COCOONFORTONY

I set-up my 6-inch AP refractor with a new f/5.3 telecompressor and 11K SBIG camera on the MI-250 mount to do quickie damage on the Cocoon Neb and its dark lanes. The result is a several hour long, two degree effort under gorgeous pre-hurricane skies (Fall, 2009).  The wide-field image consists of 9.4 total hours of LRGB through the 6-inch refractor @f5.3 with colors binned 2X2.  The tighter image was taken with my RCOS and is 6 hours total LRGB color binned in July.  VdB147 is the small blue reflection nebula just to the left of the Cocoon.  Idaho dustmeister Tom Davis really violated this object (link below).  There wasn’t enough time to do any damage with the RCOS that week as most of the star party was cloudy – but we had a great time and went deep.  Don (Astrodon) and Nikki Goldman attended that star party, gave an amazing talk and enjoyed the Cocoon starlight!
